Meaford, ON’s Electric Eclectics Lines Up HEALTH, AIDS Wolf and MYTHS for Fifth Annual Festival
3/30/2010 By David Dacks

Electric Eclectics, one of the most offbeat music festivals in Canada, has released the line-up of its fifth annual event, which will take place in Meaford, ON from July 30 to August 1.

This year’s featured artists include thick slabs of noise from HEALTH, AIDS Wolf and MYTHS, avant-songcraft from Fancie and Friendly Rich & the Lollipop People, and indescribable, gotta-be-there artistry from Internet phenom Let’s Paint TV, amplified balloon player Ricardo Arias and circuit bending pioneer Nicolas Collins. Previously announced acts include Danger Bay, Six Heads, Gardenia, the Allison Cameron Band, Toddler Body and Transmorphus Sound Ensemble.

Electric Eclectics is a proper pitch-your-tent experience, but its musical offerings are much more diverse than your average sun-baked beerfest. Organized by Chris Worden, Laura Kikauka and Gordon Monahan (who Exclaim! recently profiled here), the festival is more of an outdoor art gallery with multiple on-site installations, workshops, DJ tent and a film program. Tiny Meaford, near Owen Sound, is a picturesque setting for a crowd that’s among the most respectful to be found at any music festival. The whole shebang, including camping, is priced at $65 (day passes are also available).

The film festival will showcase a performance from renowned Canadian experimental director Peter Mettler. Media artists Marla Hlady, Paul Walde and Christof Migone will be mounting installations. And just to keep you on your toes, performance artist Andrew Harwood will add one of many X factors to the proceedings: his alter ego Madame Zsa Zsa will dispense fortune telling and psychic readings to the audience.

More artists, DJs and details of workshops will be announced soon. Check the Electric Eclectics website for updates and ticket information.

Earthwalker

Above is the cover for the debut s/t album by Pyramids which I picked up recently. The cover of this album really invoked an intense curiosity in me. The majestic caribou and the strange geometric shapes adorning their antlers was somehow a perfect visual match. Upon hearing the music for the first time you just realize it all makes sense. Beautiful, intensely layered and textural music. I also discovered the source of the cover image, created by Heather and Ivan Morrison, a wife and husband duo who create all manner of evocative images and installations.

----
For their second solo show in the gallery, Heather and Ivan Morison continue in their attempt to survey the earth by collecting images, sounds and stories and rebuilding the familiar into a series of adventures that blend Natural History and Science Fiction. Their work mixes fact and fiction, constructs narratives through different personas, takes us to Transylvania, China, Ecuador, New Zealand and Wales to investigate myths, roses, mushrooms and woods and invites us to contemplate the pleasures and passions of their endeavours.

Starmaker, a medium format slide show of images, entangles the realms of natural and cultural history and science fiction so that we can appreciate the oddities of both. Featuring dioramas from the American Museum of Natural History, rose farming in Ecuador and the coastline of the UK, the projection is accompanied by field recordings and electronic sounds sampled from sci-fi movies.

In Crystal Worlds, the artists re-invent beehives into modernist sculpture. By combining form, texture, colour and scent (from cedar wood) the standard bee-keeping trays are transformed into monolithic, surreal columns that might or not belong to our world.

Earthwalker is a series of photographs onto which the artists draw architectural-like structures, referring geometry, kites, fungi growth or extra-terrestrial invasion. Like purposeful doodles, the drawings imbue the images with humour, fantasy or threat.

Gardenia footage 24/2/10

Thanks to Steve Ward for capturing this as well as putting on the show. Unfortunately the set gets cut off just a little more than 2/3 of the way through. Still a decent 20min though. Bron's synth & vocals are a bit too quiet in the PA, so be liberal with your speaker volume. Also don't let the start time of the video fool you, the first 10min is just us setting up and people walking around the stage, which ended up getting recorded by accident.

This is the second time Gardenia has ever performed compositions live and third set of live collaboration with Bron Halpin. The set opens with the piece 'Spectral Shift', which you can hear a recorded (extended) version of on the 'Untitled' CDR and a short version on the
myspace page. It was played here with some different nuances/arrangements/instrumentation.

note: click the play bar to watch here. If you hit the big play button it will take you to the ustream website.
