GATES - FIRST LIVE RITUAL
Gates first live sonic ritual took place Sunday September 26th, just after the passing of the Autumnal Equinox here in the western hemisphere. A welcoming ritual for the coming cold days and a farewell to the long days of summer. This performance featured yours truely, Bryan W Bray as well as James McDonough, Pau Torres and Chris Worden. It was only a small gathering of people who joined us that night but it felt right.
Much like the release of 'Moths Have Eaten the Core', a live arrangement of Gates took much time and patience. I had not revisited these pieces of music since the recording process was finished and it proved to be a great challenge working out how to perform such abstract forms in a live setting. Being that, while improvisation is involved (and that improvisation is a key component in much of my music) they all hinge on very specific ideas/themes and chord progressions or tonalities that could not be followed in any sort of structure based in rhythm or tempo. Being joined by such talented and adpet musicians however, as those mentioned above, brought the whole together better than I could have expected.
much thanks to Scott Sokoloski for the poster and prints, Karol Orzechowski for the photos and Peter Teng & SOLUS and especially to OLD WITCH for the amazing end to the night.
